Hedges,
Screens
& Windbreaks

We are frequently asked for suggestions about hedges and screens, so we thought we’d give you some information on a few of the different plants available. When choosing your hedge plants you need to think about things such as position, height, width, flowers, and most importantly, how often are you prepared to prune?

If you want a screen in a narrow area don’t overlook climbers. They can make a great screen in a short time, without taking up too much space. They need regular trimming to keep them in shape, but then so do hedges.

Mc Donalds restaurants always have nice examples of hedges, all beautifully trimmed like we’d want in our own gardens. But remember they have gardeners to come around and maintain those hedges on a regular basis. Some of the most frequently used hedges at Mc Donalds are Japanese Box, Murraya, Camellia Sasanqua and Photina Robusta.

The following are a few examples of some popular and easy to grow hedges.

Murraya - Lovely glossy foliage, responds well to regular trimming which keeps it nice and bushy. Highly perfumed white flowers during spring and summer. Medium growth speed approx. 30cm per year, improved with regular feeds of animal manure.

Japanese Box - A great formal hedge if you’re prepared to wait. This is the fastest grower of the Buxus family at approx 15cm per year. Nice for low hedges and borders.

Westringea - A lovely fast growing native which grows to 2m and responds well to trimming. Many varieties available with blue or white Rosemary like flowers.

Lilly Pilly - hardy attractive natives ranging in size from 1.5m to 25m. Most have attractive pink to red tinged new foliage. White or pink fluffy flowers in summer, generally followed by pink fruit. There are many varieties of Lilly Pilly available. Some of the nicer hedging specimens are Syzygium ‘Cascade’ to 3m, S.Elite select form to 3m or Tiny Trev to 750mm.

Photinea Robusta (no picture) - A fast growing hedge. New foliage has a red or bronze colouring. White pannicle flowers in spring and summer. Grows approx. 75cm-1m per year. Get those secateurs sharpened.
