DID YOU
KNOW? |
| Fire
Ants |
|
We are being warned about Fire Ants and their
ability to destroy our outdoor lifestyle. |
Fire Ants will put an end to kids playing in
the backyard and picnics in the park. They haven't been reported this far
down the coast yet but we have to be on the look out. Fire Ants are very
aggressive and their bite is painful, usually leaving a blister. They are
responsible for killing thousands of crabs on Christmas Island and they will
attack anything
if
disturbed. The threat of infestation is so extreme that trucks which have
been parked in known fire ant areas for more than 3 days have to be
fumigated before they can leave the area.
The ants are small 2-6mm long and reddish brown and black in colour. Their
nests are domed up to 40cm high with no visible entry/exit holes. Never
disturb the nest or they will just move and can't be inspected and treated.
If you think you may have Fire Ants ring the NSW Agricultural Call Centre on
1800 888 251. Suspect ants should be sprayed with insect killer, scooped up
with a plastic spoon and put in a small plastic container (like a medicine
bottle) and posted to Taxonomy Unit Orange Agricultural Institute Forest Rd
